Raw dog food safety: handling, storage and defrosting
Raw pet food needs careful handling. Buying from a reputable supplier and keeping it frozen do not make it sterile. Plan storage and cleaning before opening a pack.
Read and keep the label
Follow the manufacturer’s storage, defrosting and use instructions for the actual product. Keep batch details and dates available. If instructions are missing or a delivery’s condition concerns you, contact the supplier before feeding it.
Store and defrost separately
Keep raw pet food frozen until needed and away from human food. UK Pet Food advises defrosting it in a sealed container at the bottom of the fridge. Plan ahead rather than thawing on a worktop, in warm water or by microwaving a bone-containing blend. Do not refreeze thawed raw pet food.
Clean hands, equipment and feeding areas
Use dedicated containers and utensils. Wash hands after handling raw food and clean and disinfect surfaces, bowls and equipment it has touched. Do not wash or rinse raw meat or offal as a supposed decontamination step.
Deal with leftovers promptly
Remove uneaten raw food and discard it as soon as reasonably practical. Keep bins secure. Freezing or rinsing a questionable portion cannot establish that it is safe to feed.
Think about everyone in the household
UKHSA/APHA advises that children under five should not handle raw pet food or treats. Discuss raw feeding with your vet and relevant health professional if anyone in the household is particularly vulnerable to infection. A dog appearing healthy does not remove the need for hygiene.
